WINNER: Katy Day Congratulations! And thanks to everyone who participated.
REMEMBER! Next Monday, March 30th we will post our next Trivia Challege.

Water is a precious resource. Water is necessary for life on Earth to exist. While doctors state that humans can go 4 - 6 weeks without food, a person can only survive 2 to 10 days without water.

Bird Watching: Things to do on and around Earth Day

On March 11th, Spring Bird Migration started and Chicago is in the path of a major migratory route. This presents Chicagoans with a great opportunity to see many different birds right here in the city, along the lakefront and the Chicago River.

You can include birding as a part of your Earth Day Celerbration any time over the next several weeks. Birdwatching can be enjoyed by anyone, including children, and is a great way to get kids outside and involved in nature.

Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

1. Bird Field Guide. You will need a field guide reference to help you identify the birds in your area. To start out you can borrow a book, get a used book or purchase one for around $12.00 to $20.00. There are several guides including North American, Eastern versus Western U.S., as well as beginners guides. I prefer the National Geographic North American Field Guide and my kids use the Peterson First Guide to Birds of N.A. Check out the beginning of these books for valuable tips on identifiying birds.

2. Binoculars. These come in all shapes and sizes and costs. See if you can borrow a pair to test out before buying your own. For city birding you won't need as powerful a pair as you would for other excursions. For me using binoculars is the trickiest part of birding. If takes some practice not only to train your eyes to look through them, but also to adjust them properly and fast enough.

3. Local Checklist. This can be the most helpful tool. A local checklist will tell you what birds you can find at what time of year in a local region. I always contact The Audubon Society when traveling for a local checklist. It helps narrow things down. Visit www.audubon.org/chapter for a listing of local Audubon chapters.

4. Notebook. This is to help you keep track of what birds you saw, where, and when. You can also include the weather conditions. I started off with a regular little notebook, but recently bought a beautiful birder's journal at Norton's USA. This information helps you become a better birder and learn about the birds in your area. It is also useful for bird counts. Organizations like the Audubon Society conduct regular bird counts to help them determine a number of things about bird populations.

Birding Etiquette. There are some simple rules for birding. Tread lightly and quitely. Have respect for Nature and fellow birders. Leave no trace.

Places to go around Chicago:

Almost anywhere along the Chicago River is great for birdwatching during Spring and Fall migration. Many migrating birds stay right within the river corridor.

The lakefront is another great spot. Try the Bird Sanctuary at Montrose Beach or by the Totem Pole at Addison. Another great location is Jackson Park or the Paul Douglas Nature Sanctuary.

For more information on bird watching and great birding spots visit www.audubon.org
Have Fun! And let me know what you find!

RECYCLE ME Week 3 Trivia Challenge Winner!

Monday, March 16th I asked the following questions for a chance to win an I AM GREEN shirt:

QUESTIONS:
1. What does "Post-Consumer" mean in reference to Post-Consumer Recycled Paper?

2. Can you compost paper?

3. What material accounts for the largest component of waste in landfills?

The Answers:
1. Post-Consumer is material discarded after consumer use such as old magazines, old telephone directories, and residential mixed paper.

2. Yes, you can compost paper.

3. Paper is the largest component of waste in a landfill.

WINNER: Carolyn Cullen! Congratulations! And thanks to everyone who participated.
REMEMBER! Next Monday, March 23rd we will post our next Trivia Challege.

There are two important things to remember about post consumer waste: Recycle It and Buy It! Or Buy It and Recycle It!

Most materials are recyclable, so always read labels when you are making a purchase to see if the packaging or item can be recycled. You can get juice in a juice box that cannot be recycled, or in a glass bottle that can be recycled. Next, recycle it! Whether you have a curbside facility or a drop off, take your post consumer recyclables to the recycling bin. And finally, but just as important, buy post consumer recycled products. This completes the recycling circle and makes post consumer recycables valuable. When you have a choice, pick the item that states made from post consumer recycled material or made from recycled material. That means the material wasn't virgin. A box may state "recyclable" and that is good to know, but it is ideal to support the recycling industry by buying already recycled products. It increases the demand for recycled products.

Why is all of this important? First, virgin materials are still used, including ancient trees from Old Growth Forest. We should be able to meet the demand for materials in other ways, i.e. tree farms and recycled paper. Second, recycling saves energy and reduces air pollution. Aluminum is the ideal recycleable product; it has an energy savings and air pollution savings of 95% each! Third, landfills not only take up valuable space, they are breeding grounds for disease and also emit methane, a green house gas, that is more potent than carbon dioxide.

How to get started? Recycling Post Consumer waste is now easier than ever. You can go online to your local government website for a listing of facilities that will take paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass, as well as batteries, solvents, and electronics.

Check out these sites for more information: www.epa.gov; www.chicagorecycling.org

Climate Change is the Issue of our time. Education and Action are the solutions. While every action we take has an impact we are challenged to make that impact low, neutral, or even negative.

The exciting news is that there are so many wonderful businesses and non-profits already in existence to help educate us and help us be responsible for our carbon footprint. There are businesses everywhere that use renewable energy and produce low impact products. I would estimate there is a low impact alternative for any product you wish to buy. Two easy ways to find these products are to check out the registered businesses listed at Green American and The Organic Trade Association.

For more information on Climate Change, resources, things you can do at home and on the road, visit the Envrionmental Protection Agency, The Green Community Center, or Chicago Climate Action Plan.

The Blue Planet - Origins of the Earth

Earth Day is just around the corner so I thought I would write about the planet we celebrate. It is such a fascinating story!

Scientists estimate the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. After our sun was formed A mass of dust and gas, a solar nebula, shot out into space and formed a disk that revolved around the sun due to its gravitational pull, eventually creating our solar system.

But Earth didn't start out as a Blue Planet. In the beginning it was a hot, red, uninhabitable molten planet. No oceans of water, no ozone layer. Theoritically water was first present on Earth through outgassing from the interior but was quickly wisked away by solar winds which were much stronger before the atmosphere's formation.

About 4.2 billion years ago water accumulated to form the oceans. The atmosphere was comprised of ammonia, methane, water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, but no ozone layer. Life had to evolve within the protection of the oceans. It was about 4 million years ago that the first molecule replicated and about 3.5 million years ago when the last common ancestor of all life existed.

2.7 billion years ago breathable oxygen began to develop in the atmosphere which allowed for the formation of the ozone layer and for life to come out of the oceans. Without the ozone layer any plant or animal life would quickly perish. With oxygen came the rapid evolution of life forms.

And while it took so long for life to evolve scientist predict that the Earth will only be habitable for the next 500 million years due to the life cycle of the Sun.

I write all of this because to me it is a facinating and amazing story, whether or not you believe God had a hand in it. It is a story of something unique, as far as we know, and something precious, Life.

So while you celebrate Earth Day this year, whether it is your first time or fortieth, think about this: the most environmental thing you can do is really quite simple, be responsible. Let's make it through the next 500 million years.

RECYCLE ME is getting ready and we've been checking out what's going on around Chicagoland. From fashion and food to several Earth Day celebrations, we've got the low down and we will be blogging about it and other environmental topics all the way through to Earth Day.

We are also celebrating our One Year Anniversary and will be hosting several trivia contests to test your EQ (environmental knowledge). The trivia prizes will be our famous 'I AM GREEN' shirt. Win and you will be so ready for Earth Day with your stylin' oh so eco-responsible shirt. How could you have less of an environmental impact? Go topless! But I wouldn't recommend that in April in Chicago.

And, while I may get silly in some of my blogging I want everyone to know I am very serious about being environmentally responsible and you will read more about that over the next several weeks.

Stay tuned for details on our trivia contests.
